The Italian fashion brand Prada and Houstan-based startup Axiom Space revealed the new spacesuit during the International Astronautical Congress in Milan reported CNN.
It will reportedly be worn by the first woman and the first person of colour to land on the moon during the Artemis 3 mission, which NASA believes will happen in the latter half of 2026. The high-tech spacesuit does not contain any flashy colours or a Prada logo, as it will not be worn on a runway.
The mostly white spacesuit has a cropped torso and specially designed boots, allowing astronauts to spacewalk for at least 8 hours a day. The white material of the spacesuit will reflect heat and offer protection to the astronauts from extremely hot temperatures and lunar dust.
The spacesuit is a representation of streamlined design and high-class technology. It also features a few red lines that represent Prada’s Linea Rossa technical line, first developed to outfit its America’s Cup sailing team, Luna Rossa. In Italian, Luna Rossa roughly translates as Red Moon. “We’re blending engineering, science, and art,” said Russell Ralston, executive vice president of Axiom Space, during the press conference.
As technology advances, more and more people will be able to go to space. Today, only people with deep pockets can go to space, but soon, space travel will be more accessible to everyone.
Recently, tech billionaire Jared Isaacman carried out the first private spacewalk, marking the beginning of a new era in space exploration. With the beginning of this new era, the spacesuits needed a major upgrade too, as the previously used spacesuits were less flexible and mobile. The new Prada spacesuit marks a significant development in spacesuit design.
